Guwahati, April 22: The Assam Police honoured two of its personnel for their outstanding achievements at the 17th Asian Lawn Bowls Championships held in New Delhi. The athletes were congratulated by Assam Director General of Police Hardi Singh for bringing pride to the police force and the nation.

Among those felicitated was Nayanmoni Saikia, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam Police, who won the gold medal in the women’s singles category. Saikia is one of India’s most accomplished lawn bowlers and an Arjuna Awardee (2022). She gained international recognition as part of the Indian women’s team that won a historic gold medal in the lawn bowls fours event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Born in Golaghat district of Assam, she has represented India in multiple Commonwealth Games and international tournaments, earning several medals in Asian and global competitions.

Another Assam Police personnel, Havildar Putul Sonowal, also delivered an impressive performance at the championship. He secured gold in the men’s singles event and a bronze medal in the men’s triples, contributing significantly to India’s overall success at the continental tournament. Sonowal is a prominent lawn bowls player from Assam who has represented India in international competitions and has previously won medals in events such as the World Ranking Line City Cup in Singapore.
Officials said the achievements of Saikia and Sonowal highlight the growing prominence of Assam in lawn bowls and demonstrate how sportspersons within the police force continue to excel at the international level.
Congratulating the medal winners, Assam Police praised their dedication, discipline, and commitment, noting that their victories have brought honour to both the police department and the country.
