The case was registered by Assam Police on charges of defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy following Khera’s recent allegations that Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan, holds multiple foreign passports and undisclosed assets abroad.
According to reports, Assam Police visited Khera’s residence in New Delhi on April 7 in connection with the case, but he was not present at the time. Khera subsequently approached the Telangana High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail.

On April 10, Justice K. Sujana of the Telangana High Court granted Khera one-week relief, allowing him time to approach the competent court with jurisdiction to seek regular anticipatory bail in the matter.
The Assam government has now challenged the High Court’s order before the Supreme Court, seeking to set aside the interim protection granted to the Congress leader.
