During the interaction, members of the Press Club raised key concerns, including the long-pending demand for the allotment of government land to establish a permanent office for the club. Despite serving more than 1,500 media professionals for over five decades, the Gauhati Press Club continues to function without its own premises.
The delegation also proposed the introduction of a structured Group Health Insurance Scheme for journalists, suggesting a partnership with a public sector undertaking or the state government to support media professionals.

Dr. Kota acknowledged the significant role played by the Gauhati Press Club in strengthening the link between the administration and the public over the years. He assured the delegation that their concerns would be examined with due priority and processed as per established procedures.
The meeting also discussed the need to clearly define the scope of the “press” in the rapidly evolving digital media landscape. The Chief Secretary sought inputs from the Press Club to help develop a more inclusive and forward-looking policy framework to ensure benefits reach deserving media professionals.
Both sides agreed to work collaboratively toward strengthening the media ecosystem and promoting the larger public interest.
