Arunachal CM Pema Khandu Dedicates Upgraded Kitpi Mini Hydel Project to People of Tawang

Tawang, April 9: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday dedicated the upgraded Kitpi Mini Hydel Project (Phase–I) to the people of Tawang, marking another significant step toward strengthening the district’s renewable energy infrastructure and ensuring reliable power supply in the region.

The dedication ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, MLAs Tsering Lhamu and Namgay Tsering, senior government officials, engineers, and local residents. The event highlighted the state government's continued commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and improving essential infrastructure in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh.

Situated at Kitpi Village on the Nametrong River, the Kitpi Mini Hydel Project is a small hydropower facility that generates electricity by harnessing the natural flow of water. As part of the recent upgrade, the project has been re-rated from 3×500 kilowatts (kW) to 2×750 kW, increasing its operational efficiency and power generation capacity through better optimization of available resources and modernized systems.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Khandu said the upgraded project would play a crucial role in ensuring a more stable and dependable electricity supply for Tawang and surrounding areas. He noted that reliable power is essential for improving the quality of life of citizens and supporting economic activities, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and public services.

Khandu emphasized that the project reflects the government's focus on harnessing clean and renewable energy sources while reducing dependence on conventional power generation methods. He added that hydropower remains one of Arunachal Pradesh’s greatest natural assets and can significantly contribute to the state's sustainable development goals.

The Chief Minister also expressed appreciation to the engineers, officials, and workers involved in the successful execution of the upgrade. He said investments in renewable energy infrastructure not only strengthen energy security but also create opportunities for long-term development and environmental conservation.

The upgraded Kitpi Mini Hydel Project is expected to benefit thousands of residents in Tawang district by providing improved power reliability while supporting Arunachal Pradesh’s broader vision of sustainable and green development.
