Imphal, April 15: The All Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland (AZSU-AMN) has elected a new team of office bearers for the 2026–2029 tenure following its general election held on April 14 at Namdunlung, Imphal, marking an important transition in the leadership of one of the prominent student organisations representing the Zeliangrong community across the three northeastern states.

According to a press release issued by the union, the election process witnessed enthusiastic participation from delegates and representatives of the federating units from Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland. The event also drew the presence of former office bearers, senior members, student leaders, and well-wishers, reflecting the significance of the occasion for the organisation and the wider Zeliangrong community.
The highlight of the election was the closely contested race for the post of President, which saw Haibeube Kuame, representing AZSU Assam, and Amonbo Zeliang of AZSU Nagaland competing for the top position. The contest generated considerable interest among delegates, with both candidates receiving strong support from their respective federating units.
Following the voting process, Haibeube Kuame emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins, securing 21 votes against 20 garnered by Amonbo Zeliang. The one-vote difference underscored the competitiveness of the election and reflected the active democratic engagement of the delegates participating in the process.
In addition to the presidential election, Chiheuding Khate was elected unopposed as Public Relations Secretary, while Haikanghingbe Newme was elected unopposed as Treasurer. The union stated that several positions remained vacant and would be filled later through an executive expansion process to be undertaken by the newly elected leadership team.
The AZSU-AMN noted that the election was conducted in a peaceful and transparent manner, with members demonstrating maturity, unity, and respect throughout the proceedings. The organisation stated that the close outcome of the presidential race reflected the strength of its democratic traditions and the confidence members had in both candidates.
Congratulating the newly elected office bearers, the union expressed hope that the incoming leadership would continue to uphold the objectives of the organisation and work towards the welfare, educational advancement, and overall development of Zeliangrong students across the region.
The election proceedings concluded with closing remarks delivered by Election Commission member Vitono Haralu, who commended the delegates and participants for ensuring a smooth and successful election process. A benediction prayer offered by Kadichun Kamei marked the formal conclusion of the event.
With the formation of a new leadership team, AZSU-AMN is expected to continue its efforts in addressing student issues, promoting educational opportunities, preserving the cultural identity of the Zeliangrong community, and strengthening cooperation among its federating units in Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland over the next three years.
