Manipur Orders Seizure of Class 8 NCERT Textbook Following Supreme Court Direction

Imphal, March 2, 2026: The Government of Manipur has ordered the immediate stoppage and seizure of the Class VIII (Part-2) Social Science textbook titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond” (First Edition, February 2026), published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

The action follows directions issued by the Supreme Court of India in a suo motu writ (Civil) taken up on February 26, 2026. The matter pertains to Chapter 4, “The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society,” which contains a sub-topic discussing “Corruption in the Judiciary.”

Acting on the apex court’s directive, the state government has ordered that all physical and digital copies of the textbook in circulation - including those in schools, storage facilities, and retail outlets - be immediately seized and removed from public access.

The Supreme Court has also fixed personal responsibility on the NCERT Director and school principals to ensure that copies are sealed and that further instruction using the book is halted.

In compliance, the Directorate of Education (Schools), Manipur, has directed all schools and book retailers across the state to submit seized copies to their respective Zonal Education Offices by March 6, 2026, at 1 PM without fail.
