Venuzo Dawhuo, Kiitho Puro Crowned Champions at Chakhesang Wrestling Meet

Pfutsero, February 21, 2026: The 30th Senior and 4th Under-15 Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship 2026, organised by the Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA), concluded on a high note at the Pfutsero Sports Complex, showcasing the rich heritage of Naga traditional wrestling and the remarkable talent of wrestlers from across the state.

The championship drew enthusiastic participation from various wrestling units representing different regions of Nagaland, with athletes competing in intense bouts that highlighted strength, skill, discipline, and sportsmanship. Spectators from across the district and beyond gathered to witness one of the state's most prestigious indigenous sporting events, which continues to play a vital role in preserving and promoting the traditional sport among younger generations.

In the highly competitive Senior Category, Venuzo Dawhuo of Chakhesang Area Wrestling Association (CAWA) emerged as the champion after a series of impressive performances throughout the tournament. With his victory, Dawhuo claimed the coveted championship title along with a cash prize of ₹2.50 lakh. His consistent display of technique, endurance, and determination earned him recognition as one of the standout performers of the championship.

The runner-up position was secured by Hiiliiyi D. Vadeo of Southern Wrestling Association (SWA), who received a cash award of ₹1.70 lakh. Venu Vadeo of Chozuba Range Wrestling Association (CRWA) finished in third place and was awarded ₹1.30 lakh, while Mulusii Veswuh of CRWA secured fourth place and received ₹1 lakh.

The Under-15 Category also witnessed exciting contests among emerging young wrestlers, reflecting the growing popularity of traditional wrestling among Nagaland's youth. Kiitho Puro of Southern Wrestling Association (SWA) claimed the championship title in the category and received a cash prize of ₹50,000. His performance demonstrated exceptional promise and marked him as one of the rising talents in Naga wrestling.

Zuve-o Keyho of Phek Area Wrestling Association (PAWA) secured the runner-up position and received ₹30,000, while Mutuve Dozo of CRWA finished third, earning ₹15,000. Bizo Chizo of PAWA claimed fourth place and was awarded ₹10,000.

Apart from the individual awards, special recognition was given to outstanding wrestling units. The Chozuba Range Wrestling Association (CRWA) was declared the Group Champion, reflecting the strong overall performance of its wrestlers throughout the championship. The Phek Area Wrestling Association (PAWA) was honoured with the Best Disciplined Team Award, acknowledging the exemplary conduct and sportsmanship displayed by its participants.

The championship was graced by James P.K. Sangma, National Working President of the National People's Party (NPP), as the special guest. The event was also attended by officials of the Naga Wrestling Association (NWA), the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), representatives of various wrestling bodies, community leaders, and sports enthusiasts.

Addressing the gathering, dignitaries praised the role of traditional wrestling in preserving Naga cultural identity while promoting discipline, unity, and healthy competition among youth. They highlighted the importance of supporting indigenous sports and providing opportunities for talented athletes to excel.

A notable feature of the event was the announcement of the CWA wrestlers selected to represent the association at the upcoming Naga Wrestling Association Meet 2026. The selection was welcomed by wrestling enthusiasts, who expressed confidence that the chosen athletes would perform strongly at the state-level competition.
