Tawang Tides Championship Concludes; Kiren Rijiju Kayaks on Tawang Chu River

Tawang, February 15: The Tawang Tides International Kayaking Championship 2026 concluded on a high note on Saturday with a colourful closing ceremony and prize distribution programme held at Bongleng-Kharung-Lungla along the scenic Tawang Chu River. The championship brought together kayaking enthusiasts, athletes, officials, and adventure sports lovers from across India and abroad, further strengthening Arunachal Pradesh’s reputation as a premier destination for adventure tourism and water sports.

The closing ceremony celebrated not only the achievements of the participating athletes but also the growing success of the championship as a flagship sporting event in the Himalayan region. Competitors showcased their skills on the challenging waters of the Tawang Chu River, providing thrilling performances throughout the event and drawing appreciation from spectators and organisers alike.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu described the championship as a celebration of energy, determination, sportsmanship, and adventure. He said the successful conduct of the event reflects the state's immense potential to emerge as a major hub for water sports, outdoor recreation, and eco-tourism.

A major highlight of this year's championship was the participation of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who took to the waters of the Tawang Chu River in a kayak. With this, he became the first Union Minister to experience kayaking at the championship venue, a gesture widely applauded by athletes, organisers, and local residents.

Sharing his experience, Rijiju described Tawang as a world-class destination for adventure sports and eco-tourism. He highlighted the region’s breathtaking natural beauty, pristine rivers, and unique landscape, which make it ideal for hosting international sporting events and attracting tourists from around the world.

Chief Minister Khandu expressed confidence that with sustained efforts by the Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA) and the Arunachal Kayaking & Canoeing Association, the state would continue producing talented athletes capable of excelling at national and international competitions.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the championship served as an important platform for promoting tourism, showcasing local culture, and encouraging youth participation in adventure sports. The successful conclusion of the event reinforced Arunachal Pradesh’s growing stature as one of India’s most exciting destinations for adventure tourism and international sporting excellence.
