Addressing the media, Sarma said a photograph showing Gogoi accompanying a group of youths to the Pakistan Embassy in New Delhi went viral while he was in Singapore promoting Assam as an investment destination. According to the Chief Minister, Abdul Basit, who was then Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India, was present during the interaction.
Placing the issue in a broader national context, Sarma referred to the Kargil War and recalled the sacrifice of Captain Jintu Gogoi from Assam. He said the matter must be viewed against the backdrop of India’s strained relations with Pakistan and the strong national sentiment during Operation Sindoor. Sarma stated that he initially believed the photograph to be doctored but later realised it was genuine after Congress leaders endorsed it publicly. He added that the issue could not be examined in isolation, prompting authorities to widen the scope of the investigation.

The Chief Minister also claimed that Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, allegedly linked to Gogoi’s wife Elizabeth Gogoi, deleted his tweets and deactivated his social media account after the Assam Police began its investigation. Sarma said Sheikh had earlier tagged Elizabeth Gogoi in social media posts, and the sudden deletion of content suggested an attempt to shield someone in Assam. He described this development as evidence of a “live connection” among those under scrutiny.
In fresh allegations, Sarma further claimed that there were “startling revelations” in the case, alleging that Gogoi had travelled to Pakistan with some associates. He said the matter is being probed from a national security perspective and accused the Congress MP of maintaining links with Pakistan.
The Congress party has not yet issued an official response to the allegations made by the Assam Chief Minister.
