Guwahati, February 8, 2026: The Assam Cabinet on Friday approved the constitution of the 8th Assam Pay Commission, 2026, marking a significant step towards revising the pay structure, allowances and service conditions of state government employees, while keeping in view the state’s overall financial position.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The proposed Pay Commission will examine existing pay and service conditions and submit recommendations aimed at ensuring fair compensation and long-term sustainability of state finances.
Alongside the Pay Commission, the Cabinet cleared several major policy decisions spanning higher education, school education, agriculture and youth entrepreneurship.
To strengthen higher education infrastructure, the Cabinet approved the allotment of land for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Guwahati, a move expected to significantly expand access to quality management education and enhance institutional excellence in Assam.
In a major push towards Atmanirbhar Assam, the Cabinet sanctioned ₹400 crore for the implementation of the Chief Minister Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan, which includes support for paddy procurement above Minimum Support Price (MSP), working capital loans, and initiatives to promote youth entrepreneurship across the state.

The Cabinet also approved the allotment of government land at Chitalmari in Sonitpur district and Borboruahkhat in Charaideo district to the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti for the establishment of new Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. Additionally, it granted waiver of transfer premium for land earlier allotted at Chandrapur in Kamrup (Metropolitan), further expanding access to quality school education.
Supporting institutional growth, the Cabinet approved the settlement of 100 bighas of land at Kuriharapam, Paka Mouza, in favour of Krishnaguru Adhyatmik Viswavidyalaya, Sarthebari, at a liberalised premium under MB 3.0. The decision is aimed at facilitating the university’s continued expansion and specialised educational mission.
The Cabinet decisions reflect the state government’s focus on employee welfare through the 8th Pay Commission, while simultaneously prioritising education, agriculture, youth empowerment and long-term institutional development across Assam.
