Kohima, Feb 10: The Working Committee (WC) of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) has welcomed the tripartite agreement signed on February 5 between the Government of India, the Eastern Naga People’s Organisation (ENPO), and the Nagaland government for the creation of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA), calling it a move that has “rekindled hope” in Eastern Nagaland.

In a statement issued through its media cell, the WC, NNPGs described the agreement as a “timely correction of historical injustice” suffered by the people of Eastern Nagaland for decades. The committee said the development served as a powerful reminder that the will of the people remains supreme.
While welcoming the FNTA arrangement, the WC stressed that the new authority must meaningfully address long-standing administrative and economic neglect in the region. It underlined that the responsibility now lies with the Eastern Naga people to establish an independent, transparent, and innovative mechanism to ensure that commitments made on paper translate into tangible outcomes on the ground.
At the same time, the WC, NNPGs cautioned that the FNTA agreement does not resolve the larger and long-pending Indo-Naga political issue, which, it said, encompasses the entire Naga ancestral homeland. Reiterating its long-held position, the committee maintained that formal negotiations on the Indo-Naga issue had concluded on October 31, 2019, with clear negotiated charters already placed before the country’s top political leadership.
Expressing confidence that New Delhi and Kohima are aligned on the core issues, the WC noted that the so-called “status paper” is inclusive of Nagas from Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. However, it added that if the Nagaland state government chooses to pursue a separate agenda with the Government of India or seeks a new interlocutor, that would be a separate matter altogether.

As a negotiating entity, the WC, NNPGs asserted that all core political matters have already been thoroughly deliberated and agreed upon. Any attempt to dilute or downgrade the agreed position, it said, would be inconceivable.
Stating that the Naga people have moved beyond the interlocutory phase, the committee urged the Indian political leadership to proceed to the final stage - the announcement and signing of a comprehensive political agreement in line with the negotiated terms. According to the WC, this remains the only practical and rational path toward lasting peace and peaceful coexistence.
