MP Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon Dies After Collapsing During Football Match in Shillong

Shillong, February 19: Meghalaya Lok Sabha MP and Voice of the People Party (VPP) leader Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon passed away on Thursday evening after collapsing while playing football in Shillong.

According to party colleagues, the first-time parliamentarian was participating in a friendly futsal match at Mawlai Mawiong when he suddenly collapsed on the field. He was immediately rushed to Mawiong Community Health Centre and later shifted to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw for advanced treatment. Despite efforts by the medical team, doctors declared him dead at around 8:45 pm.

Following the tragic incident, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, legislators and senior political leaders rushed to the hospital.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed profound grief over the untimely demise. In a condolence message, he described Dr. Syngkon as a dedicated and compassionate leader with deep enthusiasm for public service and unwavering commitment to his people. “He was rooted in faith and served with humility, vision, and a sincere desire to uplift society,” Sangma said, extending heartfelt condolences to his family and well-wishers.

Syngkon had emerged as a prominent political figure after securing a landslide victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on a VPP ticket. He defeated three-time Congress MP Vincent H. Pala by over 3.7 lakh votes, marking a major political shift in the state.

Known for his grassroots connect and advocacy for indigenous rights, Syngkon’s sudden demise leaves a significant void in Meghalaya’s political landscape. Details regarding funeral arrangements are awaited.
