During the Question Hour, Social Welfare Minister Pu Lalrinpuii responded to a query raised by MNF legislator Ramthanmawia regarding the government's plans to strengthen de-addiction and rehabilitation services in Mizoram.

Replying to the question, the Minister stated that the government remains firmly committed to combating drug abuse and supporting individuals struggling with addiction. She informed the House that a large-scale de-addiction and rehabilitation facility is being planned in Lunglei district. The proposed centre is expected to provide a comprehensive range of services, including detoxification, rehabilitation, after-care support, counselling, and skill development programmes aimed at helping recovering addicts reintegrate into society.

Lalrinpuii said the government envisions developing a modern facility that will eventually meet international standards in addiction treatment and rehabilitation. The centre is expected to play a significant role in strengthening Mizoram’s response to substance abuse, which has emerged as a major social and public health concern in recent years.

In a related development, the Minister informed the Assembly that the government is in the process of handing over the Jordan Centre, a de-addiction facility located in Kolasib district, to the Presbyterian Church Synod. According to her, an agreement has already been signed between the state government and the Synod, which is the highest executive body of the Presbyterian Church in Mizoram.

The Minister further stated that the proposal has undergone the required scrutiny by the Law and Judicial Department and is presently under consideration by the Finance Department. Once the Synod completes its internal procedures and grants final approval, the formal handover of the Jordan Centre will take place.

Members of the Assembly welcomed the government's initiatives and stressed the need for stronger rehabilitation mechanisms, community support systems, and preventive measures to address drug addiction. The proposed Lunglei facility and the transfer of the Jordan Centre are expected to strengthen Mizoram’s efforts to provide effective treatment and long-term recovery support for individuals affected by substance abuse.
