Manipur CM Khemchand Pushes for Loktak Phumdi Cleansing During Kumbi, Thanga Visit

Imphal, February 18: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand on Wednesday held two meetings with party leaders and karyakartas during his visit to Kumbi and Thanga Assembly Constituencies, stressing grassroots strengthening and urgent environmental action in Loktak Lake.

The first meeting was held at Salam Konjil near the residence of MLA S. Premchandra Singh, followed by a second gathering at Keirenphabi Mamang Leikai near the residence of MLA T. Robindro Singh.

Addressing party workers, Khemchand emphasized the importance of strengthening organizational unity and enhancing the party’s grassroots connect in the two constituencies.

He also spoke on the urgent need for systematic cleansing of phumdis in Loktak Lake to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of fishermen and farmers while maintaining ecological balance. The issue of phumdi accumulation has long been linked to environmental degradation and economic challenges faced by local communities dependent on the lake.

Reaffirming his commitment to infrastructure development, the Chief Minister highlighted the need to improve connectivity through the construction of bridges and strengthening of road infrastructure in the region.

He said these initiatives would contribute to accelerating development in line with the vision of a Viksit Bharat and Viksit Manipur as envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
