Majuli, February 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a series of major infrastructure projects in Majuli, significantly boosting connectivity, administration and higher education in the river island district.

Strengthening Majuli–Lakhimpur connectivity, the Chief Minister ceremonially inaugurated the 702.30-metre bridge over the River Lohit at Selekghat. Constructed under Asom Mala 1.0, the bridge is part of a ₹694.77 crore project aimed at upgrading the Balichapori–Bongalmora connectivity road and building two bridges over the Lohit and Subansiri rivers. The project is expected to greatly benefit local residents by improving transportation and access.
In a major boost to administrative infrastructure, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the Integrated District Commissioner’s Office at Garamur. Built under the SOPD scheme at a cost of ₹24.83 crore, the three-storey complex spans 4,263.51 square metres and houses the DC’s office along with key departments under one roof. The facility includes modern amenities such as meeting halls, a video conference room, digital library, auditorium, childcare room and public service spaces to enhance service delivery. On the occasion, the Chief Minister planted a bakul sapling in the premises, symbolising growth and sustainability.

Marking a milestone in higher education, Dr. Sarma inaugurated the new Academic Building and Girls’ Hostel of Majuli University of Culture, constructed at a cost of nearly ₹51 crore. The three-storey academic block, with a capacity of 1,880 students, features modern classrooms, administrative offices and technology-enabled facilities. The four-storey girls’ hostel provides secure and well-equipped accommodation for 178 students.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the university, which plans to introduce Arts and Science courses soon, will emerge as a premier institution and further strengthen Assam’s academic and cultural landscape.
