The induction was announced by National People’s Party President Conrad K. Sangma, who welcomed Langthasa and his supporters into the party. In a message shared on social media, Sangma described the development as a reflection of the “growing trust in our vision of development rooted in respect for tribal identity, indigenous rights, and grassroots aspirations.”
Daniel Langthasa is a well-known political figure in Dima Hasao with years of experience in regional politics and public service. A former Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (MAC) and an ex-Congress leader, he has consistently advocated for the protection of indigenous communities and the strengthening of the Sixth Schedule provisions of the Constitution. His political career has been closely associated with issues concerning tribal autonomy, land rights, sustainable development, and inclusive governance.
Langthasa also founded the People’s Party with the objective of safeguarding the interests of tribal communities and promoting people-centric governance in the hill district. In September 2025, he announced his intention to contest the 2026 Assam Assembly elections from the reserved Haflong Assembly constituency under the banner of his regional party.

His decision to join the NPP is expected to reshape the political landscape in Dima Hasao, where regional and tribal issues remain central to electoral politics. Political observers believe the move could strengthen the NPP’s organisational presence and enhance its appeal among voters seeking greater representation of indigenous interests.
The large turnout at the Maibang convention underscored the significance of the event, with party leaders expressing confidence that Langthasa’s experience, grassroots connect, and support base would contribute to the NPP’s growing influence in Assam ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
