On the same occasion, the Chief Minister also inaugurated an 832-bed Mother and Child Hospital at the GMCH, aimed at providing specialised maternal and neonatal care. The new facility is expected to play a crucial role in reducing the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in Assam.
Calling it a “giant leap in healthcare,” the Chief Minister said the expansion and upgradation of GMCH would significantly strengthen Assam’s health infrastructure. He noted that GMCH, established in 1960, is set to undergo a comprehensive overhaul with the addition of modern facilities, advanced medical services, and expanded capacity.

The Chief Minister said the project would benefit people from across Assam and the wider Northeast, ensuring access to quality healthcare services under one of the state’s premier medical institutions.
Officials said the combined initiatives represent a historic moment for Assam’s health sector, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and strengthening tertiary medical facilities in the state.
