37-ft Statue of Maharaj Krishna Narayan Unveiled in Darrang on Chilarai Divas

Darrang, February 1: On the auspicious occasion of Chilarai Divas, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday unveiled a 37-foot-tall statue of Maharaj Krishna Narayan, the illustrious 18th-century monarch of the Koch–Rajbanshi dynasty, in Darrang.

The statue, installed along with a newly developed Children’s Park, stands as a tribute to Maharaj Krishna Narayan’s lifelong dedication to public welfare, social harmony, and cultural preservation. Describing the unveiling as a moment of immense pride, the Chief Minister said the legendary ruler’s contributions continue to define the cultural identity of Darrang and Assam even today.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister highlighted the significant role of the Koch–Rajbanshi community in shaping Assam’s social, cultural, and political history. He said the initiative reflects the government’s resolve to honour brave historical figures who were long neglected, while bringing every chapter of Assam’s diverse heritage to the forefront with dignity and justice.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister also paid rich tributes to Chilarai, the valiant general of the Koch dynasty, commemorated on Chilarai Divas. Emphasising Chilarai’s multifaceted legacy, he announced a financial allocation of ₹50 crore for the promotion of Koch culture and heritage and for the development of the erstwhile Darrang Kingdom as a major tourism hub.

To ensure timely execution, the Chief Minister directed the Public Works Department and the Darrang district administration to give concrete shape to the proposed projects, underscoring the government’s commitment to preserving Assam’s rich historical and cultural legacy.
