Firing Incident Near Litan Sparks Panic; Police Urge Public Not to Spread Rumours

Imphal, February 14, 2026: Manipur Police on Saturday reported that around 12 rounds were fired from a 12-bore weapon at approximately 10:55 AM near the foothills between Sikibung and Litan Sareikhong.

According to police, the firing was allegedly carried out by Tangkhul volunteers and caused panic and commotion among residents in the Litan area amid the prevailing tense situation. Authorities stated that the suspected blank rounds originated from a location verified by a joint team comprising District Police, CAPF personnel, and Tangkhul civilians.

Security forces had already been deployed in the area as a confidence-building measure. A team of the Border Security Force (BSF) was stationed on the Mongkot Chepu side covering the Thoubal River bank, while the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was deployed on the Litan Sareikhong side, also monitoring the river bank to maintain law and order.

Police appealed to both communities in and around Litan to refrain from spreading unverified rumours that could further escalate tensions. The public has been advised to contact the District Magistrate or the police for clarification or verification of information.

Authorities warned that legal action would be taken against individuals found spreading fake or misleading information aimed at worsening the situation.
