Dimasa Students Oppose Proposed Bifurcation of Dima Hasao on Communal Lines

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the DSU stated that such a move would be “anti-people, divisive, and contrary to the historical, cultural, and constitutional identity of the indigenous tribal communities” of the district.

The Union emphasized that Dima Hasao has long stood as a symbol of unity, peaceful coexistence, and shared heritage among diverse tribal communities. It warned that any attempt to divide the district for narrow political interests could disturb long-standing harmony and create unnecessary tension among communities.

The DSU also expressed concern over reported closed-door discussions involving a Minister of the Government of Assam on the issue, stating that matters of such importance must be handled transparently and inclusively.

The student body cautioned that if the Assam government proceeds to entertain or implement the demand without proper consultation and public dialogue, it would be compelled - along with other tribal organizations - to launch a mass democratic movement to safeguard the unity, integrity, and rights of indigenous tribal communities.

The DSU maintained that any such movement would remain peaceful and constitutional, aimed at demonstrating the collective strength and unity of the tribal population of Dima Hasao.
