Department of Science and Technology, Manipur Hosts AI Awareness Programme and Debate

Imphal, February 19: The Department of Science and Technology, Government of Manipur, organised a two-day AI Awareness Programme and Debate Competition on the theme "Artificial Intelligence: Boon or Threat to Society?" at the Manipur Science Centre, Takyelpat, on February 18 and 19, 2026. The event brought together students, academicians, and government officials to promote greater awareness and informed discussion on the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI).

The programme was graced by Secretary (Science & Technology) Smt. Kengoo Zuringla, IAS, along with Director Smt. Chingakham Shachi, Joint Secretary Smt. K. H. Leiyaphi Rita, Joint Director T.D. Kom, and other senior officials of the department. They highlighted the growing importance of AI in transforming industries, education, healthcare, governance, and everyday life while stressing the need for its responsible and ethical use.

The awareness sessions focused on introducing participants to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, its emerging applications, and the opportunities and challenges associated with its adoption. Experts encouraged students to explore AI as a tool for innovation while also understanding issues related to privacy, ethics, employment, and digital security.

Students from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) and the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) actively participated in the programme, contributing to lively discussions and the debate competition. The debate on the topic "Artificial Intelligence: Boon or Threat to Society?" provided participants with a platform to present diverse perspectives, encouraging critical thinking and evidence-based arguments on one of the most significant technological developments of the modern era.

The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates and appreciation to participants for their enthusiastic involvement. Officials stated that the initiative reflects the Department of Science and Technology's continued commitment to fostering innovation, technological awareness, and scientific temper among the youth of Manipur.
