Couple Arrested for Alleged Racial Slurs Against Arunachal Women in Delhi

New Delhi, February 25: The Delhi Police has arrested a married couple for allegedly hurling racial slurs at three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, officials said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Ruby Jain and her husband Harsh Priya Singh, were taken into custody following an investigation into an FIR registered at Malviya Nagar Police Station. The incident reportedly occurred on February 20 during an altercation over repair work at the rented accommodation of the victims.

According to police, Jain allegedly made abusive and derogatory remarks against the women during the dispute. Based on video recordings and witness statements, authorities found evidence of racially charged comments made during the confrontation.

Initially, the case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of women, and promoting enmity between groups. Subsequently, provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were added to the FIR.

Police said the investigation has now been entrusted to an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)-rank officer after the inclusion of the SC-ST Act and is being closely supervised by senior officials.

Reacting to the incident, Rekha Gupta strongly condemned the alleged harassment and expressed solidarity with the women from the Northeast. In a post on X, she said Delhi belongs to everyone and emphasized that the dignity, respect, and safety of every citizen are paramount.

Gupta added that strict legal action would be ensured against those found guilty and stated that harassment, discrimination, or humiliation of any woman would not be tolerated under any circumstances. She also said she would personally meet the victims.
