Congress MLAs File Police Complaint Over AI-Generated Video Targeting Minority Community in Assam

DISPUR, February 10: Two Congress legislators in Assam have filed a police complaint over a controversial AI-generated video allegedly circulated from the official X handle of the Assam BJP, showing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma aiming a gun at members of a minority community. The video, posted on February 7, has sparked widespread outrage and triggered demands for legal action from political leaders across the country.

Congress MLAs Sibamoni Bora and Diganta Barman lodged the complaint at Dispur Police Station on Tuesday, terming the video “highly provocative” and communal in nature. In their complaint, the legislators pointed out that the post carried overlaid texts such as “foreigner free Assam,” “No mercy,” “Why did you not go to Pakistan?” and “There is no forgiveness to Bangladeshis.”

According to the complaint, the imagery and language used were allegedly directed at Muslims of Bengali origin in Assam, who are often derogatorily labelled as “Miyas” or “Bangladeshis.” The MLAs alleged that the content had the potential to incite communal hatred and disturb social harmony in the state. They urged the police to register a case under appropriate sections of penal law and take necessary action.

Meanwhile, the Congress also staged protests in Dispur on Tuesday, with party workers raising slogans against the Chief Minister and the BJP. The demonstrations were part of a broader protest against alleged corruption involving the Chief Minister and his family.

Addressing the media, Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur questioned claims made earlier by Sarma regarding his assets. “The protest is against the Chief Minister and his wife over allegations of corruption. At first, Sarma claimed he only draws his salary and owns no property. Now questions have arisen about his wife allegedly owning 12,000 bighas of land. We want to know whether agencies like the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate will investigate these claims,” she said.

The controversy has also drawn reactions from other political parties. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a leader of the Communist Party of India have reportedly approached the Supreme Court seeking action against Sarma over alleged hate speech.

Separately, Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has also lodged a complaint with Hyderabad police, demanding immediate criminal action against the Assam Chief Minister over the video, which he described as depicting “violent” and inflammatory content.

As investigations and legal challenges gather momentum, the issue has intensified political tensions in Assam, with opposition parties demanding accountability and strict action over the alleged misuse of AI-generated content.
