Assam Congress Protests in Dispur, Targets CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Over Alleged Assets

DISPUR, February 10: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday staged a protest at the Manabendra Sharma complex in Dispur, intensifying its attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over alleged accumulation of assets and controversial social media content linked to the ruling BJP.

Congress leaders and workers demanded “transparency and accountability” from the BJP-led state government, raising questions over claims that the Chief Minister owns nearly 12,000 bighas of land. Protesters asserted that the public has a right to know how such assets were acquired, particularly after Sarma entered electoral politics.

Addressing the gathering, Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur highlighted what she described as a stark contrast between the growth of the Chief Minister’s family wealth and the financial struggles faced by ordinary citizens. “If the Chief Minister is a public figure, how can he allegedly possess 12,000 bighas of land? While the government claims to support lakhs of people through welfare schemes, many families continue to drown in debt,” she said.

Protesters also criticised the reach and effectiveness of government welfare schemes, alleging that they have failed to provide meaningful relief. Some demonstrators claimed that properties were being registered in the names of the Chief Minister’s family members, while common citizens remained burdened by debt. They further alleged that even prominent artistes such as Zubeen Garg were yet to receive justice.

Borthakur also took aim at Sarma’s political associates, alleging that those around him were offering misguided advice. She specifically mentioned Pabitra Margherita, claiming that opportunistic elements were influencing the Chief Minister’s decisions.

The Congress also strongly condemned a controversial video allegedly circulated from a BJP-linked social media handle, purportedly showing the Chief Minister firing a gun at point-blank range. Party leaders described the clip as “dangerous, undemocratic, and deeply disturbing,” alleging that it set a wrong precedent. Earlier in the day, the APCC lodged a formal complaint at Dispur Police Station, accusing the BJP Assam unit of circulating a communally provocative, AI-generated video on a microblogging platform.

The protest marked a further escalation in the Congress party’s political offensive against the Chief Minister, as it continues to press for clarification and accountability on the allegations raised.
