On February 14, 1951, Major Ralengnao Bob Khathing led a historic expedition to Tawang and hoisted the Indian Tricolour, formally bringing the region under Indian administration. The mission remains a rare example of territorial consolidation achieved through diplomacy, courage, and mutual trust rather than armed conflict.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu said February 14 is not just about roses, but a day to honour Major Khathing’s extraordinary leadership. He described the decorated World War II hero and diplomat as a figure whose bravery and tact secured India’s frontiers while winning the confidence of the local Arunachali community.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also paid tribute, calling it a proud moment in history. He said Major Khathing’s actions ensured Tawang’s rightful place in the Indian Union and strengthened Arunachal Pradesh while fortifying the unity of the nation.
