2,736 Tourists Rescued After Heavy Snowfall Strands 541 Vehicles Near Tsomgo Lake

Gangtok, February 24, 2026: The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Government of Sikkim, successfully evacuated 2,736 tourists after heavy snowfall stranded 541 tourist vehicles between 15th Mile and Tsomgo Lake.

According to official reports, intense snowfall in the higher reaches of Sherathang and surrounding areas near Tsomgo Lake led to road blockages, leaving hundreds of vehicles stuck on Tuesday.

Immediate rescue and evacuation operations were launched in coordination with the Sikkim Police, GREF/BRO personnel, Check Post officials, Tourism Permit Cell officials, ASTHA members, the JN Road Drivers Association, travel agencies, and other local stakeholders.

Through prompt and coordinated efforts, all 541 vehicles and 2,736 tourists were safely and systematically evacuated without any reported casualties. The operation was carried out under the supervision of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, ensuring the safety and well-being of visitors.

The Department expressed gratitude to the Sikkim Police, GREF/BRO, driver associations, tourism officials, and local stakeholders for their swift response and teamwork in managing the situation efficiently.

Tourists and tour operators have been advised to strictly follow weather advisories and ensure vehicles are properly equipped, including mandatory snow chains, during snowfall conditions.
