Shillong, January 25: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday congratulated Hally War of Siej village in East Khasi Hills district on being conferred the prestigious Padma Award 2026, describing him as a true ambassador of Meghalaya’s heritage, traditions, and sustainable living.

In a message shared on social media, the Chief Minister said Bah Hally War has dedicated decades of his life to nurturing and building the iconic living root bridges, a unique bio-engineering tradition of the Khasi people that symbolises harmony between humans and nature.
Recalling a personal interaction, the Chief Minister said he had met Bah Hally during a trek to the living root bridges in Siej village, where he learned that the conservationist began weaving the remarkable structures at the age of just ten years. He noted that Bah Hally’s profound traditional knowledge, deep respect for nature, and unwavering commitment to community welfare make him a deserving recipient of the national honour.
