Guwahati,January 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended heartfelt congratulations as Assam’s distinguished sons and daughters were honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri Awards 2026, calling it a moment of immense pride for the state.

In an official statement, the Chief Minister said the awardees exemplify selfless service, cultural pride, and lifelong dedication in diverse fields ranging from art and culture to public affairs and grassroots development. He added that their contributions will continue to inspire generations to work for the betterment of society.

Pokhila Lekthepi (Art | Assam)
A renowned Karbi folk singer for over five decades, popularly known as the “Queen of Melody.” She has composed more than 300 folk songs, significantly expanding the reach and preservation of Karbi music and culture.
Nuruddin Ahmed (Art | Assam)
Regarded as the architect of modern Assamese stagecraft, he designed sets for over 4,000 theatre productions and played a transformative role in Assam’s Mobile Theatre Movement.
Jogesh Deuri (Others | Assam)
A celebrated sericulturist who established Integrated Bodoland Silk Parks, engaging over 1,600 villages and benefiting thousands of farmers. His work increased women’s participation to nearly 70% in the eri silk value chain.
Haricharan Saikia (Art | Assam)
An acclaimed Sattriya dancer with a six-decade-long career. He founded a Sattriya Dance & Music School and worked extensively to promote the classical dance form and encourage women’s participation.
Kabindra Purkayastha (Public Affairs | Assam, Posthumous)
A three-time Member of Parliament and minister from Silchar, he served the public for over 45 years. He also contributed to education as the Principal of Ramakrishna Vidyapeeth, Sribhumi.
