Joint Tribes Council Imposes Restrictions After Vandalism and Threats in Ireng

Tamenglong, Jan 14, 2026: The Joint Tribes Council Manipur (JTC) has announced a series of restrictive measures across areas under its jurisdiction following what it described as a serious security incident in Ireng, citing concerns over the safety and security of the Naga community. The measures were announced through a public notice issued on Tuesday and signed by the organisation's General Secretary.

According to the notice dated January 14, the JTC strongly condemned the alleged vandalisation of a waiting shed in Ireng and the appearance of provocative graffiti that reportedly contained threats directed at the Ireng Naga community. The organisation claimed that the graffiti included threats to kill local residents and burn down their houses, describing the incident as an act intended to intimidate and create fear among the local population.

The council further alleged that the situation escalated after receiving reports that around 30 fully armed cadres belonging to the KNF-P had been deployed with the intention of carrying out the threats. The JTC expressed concern over the reported developments, stating that they posed a serious risk to the lives, dignity, and security of the Naga people residing in the area.

In response, the council announced the imposition of restrictions, including a ban on traffic movement within areas under its jurisdiction. The organisation said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure and as a means of expressing concern over the prevailing security situation.

As part of what it termed a peaceful protest and non-cooperation movement, the JTC also appealed to members of the Naga community to refrain from engaging with the Kuki community in matters relating to trade and commerce. The appeal included requests to avoid the buying and selling of essential commodities as well as limiting social, economic, and other forms of interaction until further notice.

The council stated that these measures would remain in force until an amicable and mutually acceptable resolution is reached between the Kuki and Naga communities, ensuring peace, safety, and mutual respect for all concerned.

Issuing the appeal from Tamenglong, the JTC urged the public to remain united and cooperate in implementing what it described as a collective decision taken in the interest of justice and long-term peace.

The notice reflects the position and allegations made by the Joint Tribes Council. The claims regarding the reported incident, alleged threats, and the involvement of armed cadres have not been independently verified, and no response from the organisations or authorities mentioned in the notice was available at the time of reporting.
