Shillong, January 20: Nagaland Governor and Manipur Governor Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited the Headquarters of the Director General of Assam Rifles at Laitkor, Shillong, on Sunday, where he reviewed the prevailing security situation in the Northeast and discussed measures aimed at strengthening peace, stability and development across the region.
During the visit, Governor Bhalla interacted with Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, and senior officers of the force. The discussions reflected a shared commitment to maintaining security, fostering regional peace and supporting developmental initiatives in the northeastern states.
Officials briefed the Governor on the current security scenario, operational preparedness and the various responsibilities undertaken by the Assam Rifles in the region. Deliberations also focused on the force’s role in maintaining law and order, supporting civil administration, facilitating development activities and ensuring stability in sensitive and remote areas.
Governor Bhalla appreciated the dedication, professionalism and sacrifices of Assam Rifles personnel who continue to serve under challenging conditions to safeguard the interests of the nation and the people of the Northeast. He acknowledged the force’s longstanding contribution to maintaining peace and security while also assisting local communities through various civic action and welfare programmes.
The Governor noted that the Northeast has witnessed significant progress in recent years due to improved security, infrastructure development and stronger cooperation among stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of continued coordination between security forces, state governments and civil authorities to sustain peace and accelerate socio-economic development in the region.
The visit also highlighted the multifaceted role played by the Assam Rifles in supporting government initiatives, responding to emergencies and promoting community engagement. As the oldest paramilitary force in the country, Assam Rifles has remained at the forefront of security operations and developmental support across the Northeast.
Often referred to as the “Sentinels of the North East,” the Assam Rifles continues to play a crucial role in safeguarding the region’s borders, maintaining internal security and contributing to nation-building efforts.
