Aizawl, Jan 16: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday held a meeting with Chanchal Kumar, Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), during the latter’s official visit to the state. The meeting focused on reviewing ongoing development initiatives in Mizoram and exploring ways to accelerate the implementation of key projects supported by the Ministry of DoNER.
Held at the Chief Minister’s Office in Aizawl, the discussion provided an opportunity for both sides to assess the progress of various schemes and infrastructure projects being undertaken with central assistance. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of timely approvals and fund releases to ensure that developmental programmes are completed within stipulated timelines.
During the meeting, Lalduhoma urged the DoNER Secretary to facilitate the early resolution of several pending proposals and projects submitted by the Mizoram Government. He pointed out that delays in obtaining administrative approvals, sanctions, and clearances often affect the pace of development works and increase project costs. Stressing the need for a more efficient mechanism, he called for simplification of procedures and faster decision-making to enable smoother execution of projects across the state.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Mizoram, like many northeastern states, faces unique geographical and logistical challenges. As such, timely support from the Ministry of DoNER is crucial for ensuring the successful implementation of infrastructure, connectivity, and economic development initiatives that directly benefit the people.
During the interaction, Chanchal Kumar expressed appreciation for the state government's efforts in promoting value-added agricultural activities and rural economic development. He particularly lauded the recently established ginger processing unit in Mizoram, describing it as an important initiative with the potential to transform the livelihoods of farmers.
The DoNER Secretary noted that ginger cultivation is one of the major agricultural activities in the state and serves as a key source of income for a large number of farming families. He observed that ginger production in Mizoram has been steadily increasing over the years and said that the processing facility would help farmers obtain better returns by creating opportunities for value addition, storage, and market expansion.
Kumar further stated that the Ministry of DoNER attaches significant importance to the ginger processing unit because of its potential to strengthen the rural economy and generate sustainable livelihood opportunities. He expressed confidence that such initiatives would contribute to the broader goal of promoting agro-based industries and enhancing income generation in the Northeast.
The meeting was attended by Vanlaldina Fanai, Commissioner and Secretary to the Chief Minister, who accompanied Lalduhoma during the discussions.
Officials described the meeting as productive and constructive, noting that it reaffirmed the commitment of both the Mizoram Government and the Ministry of DoNER to work closely together in advancing the state's development agenda. The interaction is expected to help strengthen coordination between the Centre and the state while facilitating the implementation of priority projects aimed at improving infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for the people of Mizoram.
