BTC Observes 6th Bodo Peace Accord Day, Calls for Time-Bound Implementation of Pending Clauses

Kokrajhar, Jan 28, 2026: The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) on Tuesday observed the 6th Bodo Peace Accord Day, commemorating the signing of the historic Bodo Peace Agreement, 2020, at a programme held at the BTC Legislative Assembly auditorium, Bodofa Nwgwr, in Kokrajhar.

The observance began with leaders and participants paying floral tributes to Upendra Nath Brahma at his statue in front of the BTC Secretariat. Signatories to the landmark accord were felicitated in recognition of their role in bringing lasting peace to the Bodoland region.

The event was attended by BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary, Assam Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, Kokrajhar MP Rwngwra Narzary, MLAs Lawrence Islary and Rabiram Narzary, along with key accord signatories including former NDFB leader Dhiren Boro and BKWAC Chief Mihineswar Basumatary. Representatives from ABSU, NDFB, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Boro Samaj and other organisations were also present, reflecting broad political and social participation.

Addressing the gathering, Hagrama Mohilary reaffirmed the BTC government’s commitment to peace, stability and development in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). He said discussions would be held with the state and central governments to ensure the time-bound implementation of the remaining clauses of the Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) under the Bodo Peace Agreement. Mohilary also assured that the BTC would pursue the demand for ST (Hills) status for Boro–Kachari communities in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao Autonomous Councils and expressed confidence that developmental commitments under the accord would be implemented in phases.

Speakers at the programme stressed that sustained peace and inclusive development depend on the full execution of the accord, including the release of former NDFB leaders who remain in jail. Retired IAS officer Hemanta Narzary attended the programme as the appointed speaker.

Meanwhile, the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) also observed the 6th Bodo Peace Accord Day at Batashipur Milan High School in Sonitpur district. Reiterating its demand for speedy and time-bound implementation of the agreement, ABSU announced that it has begun sending 10,000 postcards and 5,000 emails to Narendra Modi, urging him to expedite the process.

ABSU highlighted several pending issues, including extension of BTR areas, increase of BTC Assembly seats to 60, strengthening the Sixth Schedule, ST (Hills) status for Boro–Kachari communities in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, release of six former NDFB members still in jail, and implementation of the special development package. ABSU president Dipen Boro said democratic pressure would continue until the accord is fully implemented.

The Bodo Peace Agreement, signed on January 27, 2020, between the Government of India, Government of Assam, ABSU, NDFB factions and UPPO, is widely regarded as a milestone in restoring peace and paving the way for long-term development in Bodoland.
