Guwahati, January 20: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the Bagurumba Dwhou, the traditional dance of the Bodo community, has received unprecedented global recognition following its promotion by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, bringing one of Assam's most cherished cultural traditions into the international spotlight.
Speaking on the growing popularity of the dance form, the Chief Minister said global interest in Bagurumba has reached an all-time high, with Google search trends recording their highest level in more than two decades. He added that videos and posts featuring the dance have collectively garnered over 200 million views across the Prime Minister's social media platforms, significantly boosting its visibility among audiences worldwide.
Describing the development as a landmark moment for Assam's indigenous heritage, Dr. Sarma said the Prime Minister's outreach has enabled the rich cultural traditions of the Bodo community to reach millions of people beyond India's borders. He noted that the widespread appreciation reflects the growing global interest in India's diverse cultural heritage and traditional art forms.
"This is the power of India celebrating its roots and taking the culture of Assam to a global audience," the Chief Minister said while expressing pride over the international recognition received by the Bagurumba dance.

Bagurumba, often referred to as the "Butterfly Dance," is one of the most celebrated traditional dances of the Bodo people. Characterised by graceful movements inspired by nature, the dance is usually performed during the Bwisagu festival, symbolising harmony, joy, and the close relationship between humans and the natural world. It is regarded as one of the most distinctive cultural expressions of the Bodoland region.
The Chief Minister said the global appreciation of Bagurumba represents not only recognition for the Bodo community but also a proud moment for the entire state of Assam. He added that the growing international interest would help preserve the dance for future generations while encouraging cultural tourism and greater awareness of Assam's indigenous traditions.
Officials believe the worldwide attention generated by the Prime Minister's promotion will further strengthen efforts to preserve and promote Assam's rich cultural heritage, reinforcing the state's identity as a vibrant centre of India's diverse artistic and indigenous traditions.
