Assam to Build Sports Hostels, Ensure Jobs for Athletes Under New Sports Policy

Duliajan, January 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to nurturing grassroots sporting talent, particularly from Tea Tribes and Adivasi communities, while addressing the media at the conclusion of the Chief Minister’s Tea Tribes & Adivasi (U-17) Football Championship, 2025–26 at Nehru Maidan, Duliajan.

Highlighting major initiatives, the Chief Minister announced the establishment of dedicated sports hostels in Guwahati (1,000 capacity) and Dibrugarh (500 capacity) to provide structured training and academic support for talented young athletes. He further informed that the new Assam sports policy will ensure government job reservations for sportspersons, creating a secure pathway for athletes beyond their playing careers.

“Assam has no dearth of footballing talent,” the Chief Minister said, noting that the championship had once again showcased the depth of skill and passion for football across the state.

The final match between Tinsukia and Cachar districts proved to be a thrilling contest, drawing enthusiastic crowds and underlining the growing popularity of the sport among youth. Witnessing the match firsthand, the Chief Minister interacted with the young players, praising their technical skills, discipline, and competitive spirit.

He added that the government is developing a new holistic model for budding sportspersons, which will comprehensively address both academic education and professional training, ensuring balanced development.

The championship, aimed at promoting “The Beautiful Game” among under-17 players from Tea Tribes and Adivasi communities, has been widely lauded as a significant step towards inclusive sports development in Assam.
