Imphal, January 23: In a joint operation, the Assam Rifles and the Manipur Police recovered a large cache of explosives from the Jiribam–Tipaimukh Road in Pherzawl district on Thursday and arrested two persons, officials said.
The recovery was made during a mobile vehicle check post set up by Assam Rifles as part of heightened security measures ahead of Republic Day celebrations. Officials said a vehicle approaching the check post was found moving suspiciously. When signalled to stop, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
A joint team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police gave chase and apprehended two individuals after a brief pursuit. A subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of 30 gelatin sticks, 20 detonators, safety fuse, flexible wire, and approximately ₹1 lakh in cash. A Bolero vehicle used to transport the materials was also seized.
Security officials said the recovered items are commonly used in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The arrested individuals, along with the seized explosives and materials, have been handed over to the local police for further investigation and legal action.
