Aizawl, December 2, 2025: The Government of Mizoram has officially renamed “Raj Bhavan, Mizoram” as “Lok Bhavan, Mizoram”, following a directive communicated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India. Mizoram Officially Renames Raj Bhavan to Lok Bhavan Following Centre’s Directive

According to the notification, the renaming was carried out in accordance with a communication received from the Ministry of Home Affairs dated November 25, 2025. Acting on the directive and with the approval of the Governor of Mizoram, the state government has adopted the new nomenclature for the Governor’s official residence and secretariat premises.

The notification clearly states that “Raj Bhavan, Mizoram shall henceforth be referred to only as ‘Lok Bhavan, Mizoram.’” As a result, all official, administrative, ceremonial, and public references to the Governor’s residence in Mizoram will now use the designation “Lok Bhavan.”

The order was issued by the Governor’s Secretariat and signed by Ajit Roy, Secretary to the Governor, who confirmed that the change takes immediate effect. Government departments, public institutions, and other stakeholders are expected to update their records and communications accordingly.

The renaming is part of a broader trend seen in several parts of the country, where institutions and public establishments have adopted names rooted in Indian languages and cultural traditions. The term “Lok”, meaning “people” in several Indian languages, is often associated with democratic institutions and public service, reflecting a people-centric approach to governance.

Officials noted that the change is largely administrative in nature and does not alter the functions or responsibilities of the Governor’s office. However, it represents a symbolic shift in terminology that aligns with ongoing efforts to promote indigenous nomenclature in government institutions.

The public announcement of the renaming was also shared through official channels of the Governor of Mizoram. The communication tagged national institutions and senior leaders, including Rashtrapati Bhavan and Union Minister General (Dr.) V.K. Singh, indicating coordination and awareness at the central level.

With the notification now in force, Lok Bhavan, Mizoram becomes the official title of the Governor’s residence and secretariat, marking a new chapter in the administrative identity of one of the state’s most prominent institutions.
