Sikkim’s 89-Member EMRS Sports Contingent Leaves for National Meet in Rourkela

Gangtok, November 8, 2025: An 89-member sports contingent from Sikkim representing four Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) has departed for Rourkela, Odisha, to participate in the 4th National EMRS Sports Meet 2025, scheduled to be held from November 11 to 14.

The contingent comprises talented student-athletes selected from EMRS institutions across the state and is set to compete against participants from various states and Union Territories. The national event aims to promote sporting excellence and provide a platform for tribal students to showcase their skills at the national level.

Ahead of the competition, the Sikkim team underwent an intensive week-long training camp conducted at several key sports facilities, including Paljor Stadium, Reshithang Khel Gaon, Gangyap EMRS, and Suntoley EMRS. The camp focused on improving fitness, refining techniques, and enhancing team coordination to ensure the athletes are fully prepared for the challenges of the national meet.

The Sikkim contingent will participate in a diverse range of sporting disciplines, including Football, Basketball, Athletics, Boxing, Chess, Table Tennis, and Yoga, with competitors representing both boys’ and girls’ categories.

The team is being led by Shri Sonam Gurung, OS, who is serving as the Contingent Manager. He is supported by a dedicated team of 10 escort teachers and officials from the Tribal Affairs Division of the Department of Social Welfare, who will oversee the athletes’ welfare and coordination during the event.

The contingent was formally flagged off from the Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) complex in Gangtok by Shri Suman Gurung, Special Secretary, Social Welfare Department, and Shri Prem Kamal Rai, Joint Secretary-cum-State Nodal Officer, EMRS Sikkim.

Officials extended their best wishes to the young athletes and expressed confidence in their abilities, encouraging them to perform with dedication, discipline, and sportsmanship while proudly representing Sikkim on the national stage.
