WILLIAMNAGAR, September 1: The town of Williamnagar was a hub of activity on Sunday as thousands of admirers and supporters gathered at the Rongrenggre playground to celebrate the 78th birth anniversary of the late Purno A. Sangma and the 13th Foundation Day of the National People’s Party (NPP). The event, which drew people from across the North East, underscored the enduring legacy of the revered leader.
The day-long program began with a lively singing competition, setting a celebratory tone. Later, a coffee table book was released, and the P.A. Sangma Photo Gallery was inaugurated, offering a visual journey through his life and political career. The formal proceedings commenced with the singing of "Oh Ang Aman Asong," the NPP's anthem in Garo Hills.
Floral tributes were led by Soradini K. Sangma, the late leader's wife, along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and other dignitaries. The event also served as a platform to welcome and felicitate over 300 new members from various political parties who have joined the NPP. Additionally, several athletes from East Garo Hills were honored with the prestigious P.A. Sangma Achievers’ Award.
A new P.A. Sangma Museum Arena was inaugurated by Cabinet Minister Marcuise Marak. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described the museum as an “immersive tribute” to his father, stating that it aims to inspire both current and future generations by showcasing his life and philosophy.
In his emotional address, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma shared personal anecdotes about his father, recalling his unyielding optimism and positive spirit during the party’s early, challenging days. He reflected on his father’s name, Purno, which means "complete," and concluded that he had indeed lived a complete and meaningful life.

Several distinguished leaders also paid tribute to the late leader. Thangwang Wangham, the Arunachal Pradesh NPP President, hailed him as the “true leader of the Northeast.” Rajya Sabha MP W.R. Kharluki spoke of Sangma's deep concern for the people, while Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar praised his farsighted vision that continues to shape Meghalaya. The National Working President of the NPP, James K. Sangma, expressed gratitude to all the leaders who attended, noting their presence as a fitting tribute to his father.
