Tahazmam, September 8, 2025: The United Naga Council (UNC) has issued a heartfelt appeal urging Naga communities, democratic organizations, and concerned individuals to support its ongoing trade embargo in protest against the Government of India’s border fencing plans along the Indo-Myanmar boundary.
The UNC’s statement, released from its headquarters in Senapati, outlines how the proposed fencing threatens to divide over 1,000 km of Naga-inhabited areas across Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, cutting ties with Naga communities living in Myanmar. The Council expressed deep concerns that this move disregards the historical and cultural connections of the Naga people, violating their right to free movement, dignity, and self-determination.
In its appeal, the UNC condemned the fencing as an “inhuman act” that undermines their rights and identity, calling for unity and resistance. It emphasized that free movement has been a lifeline for Naga communities for decades and that its suspension is an attempt to harass and alienate them. The statement highlighted that consent of the Naga people must be obtained for any project affecting their land, and it urged the Government of India to abandon its plans and engage in meaningful dialogue.
The UNC also encouraged everyone to stand firm and support the trade embargo, describing it as a democratic and non-violent means of protest to defend the rights and future of the Naga people. “This is a fight for survival, dignity, and justice,” the Council declared, urging solidarity to ensure that the voices of the Naga people are heard and respected.
The Council’s call comes amid heightened tensions following the suspension of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), which has historically allowed cross-border travel without visas. The UNC reaffirmed its commitment to the Indo-Naga peace process and urged early resolution through peaceful negotiations.
