Ranchi, September 24, 2025: Sikkim’s young athletes delivered an impressive performance at the 36th East Zone Athletics Meet 2025, bringing home a gold, silver, and bronze medal and earning recognition for the state on the regional athletics stage. The prestigious meet concluded in Ranchi on Wednesday, featuring some of the most promising track and field talents from across eastern India.
Leading Sikkim’s medal tally was Phurba Hishey Sherpa, who clinched the gold medal in the 1000-metre race in the Under-18 Boys category. His outstanding performance showcased both speed and endurance, placing him at the top of the podium and highlighting the growing strength of athletics in the state.
In the Under-18 Girls category, Priya Chettri secured the silver medal in the 1000-metre event, delivering a commendable performance against strong competition from athletes across the region. Another notable achievement came from Rewa Bareily, who won the bronze medal in the Heptathlon (U-18 Girls), demonstrating versatility and skill across multiple track and field disciplines.

The Sikkim Athletic Association (SAA) congratulated the medal winners and praised their dedication, discipline, and hard work. The association also acknowledged the efforts of the team manager, coaches, support staff, and all members of the contingent, whose guidance and commitment contributed significantly to the athletes’ success.
Expressing gratitude, the association thanked the Chief Minister of Sikkim for his continued encouragement of sports and youth development. Appreciation was also extended to the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs for its support in nurturing athletic talent and facilitating participation in national-level competitions.
The East Zone Athletics Meet, organized under the aegis of the Athletics Federation of India, remains an important platform for identifying and promoting emerging talent.
