The initiative, being observed from September 16 to 22, seeks to raise awareness about road safety and reduce accidents through education, outreach and community participation.
The campaign was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister Shri Ojing Tasing and Chief Secretary Shri Manish Gupta in the presence of government officials, police personnel, students, volunteers and members of various community organizations. The bike rally, which flagged off the awareness drive, saw enthusiastic participation from riders and road safety advocates who carried messages emphasizing responsible driving, adherence to traffic rules and respect for fellow road users.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Ojing Tasing stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility and called upon citizens to adopt disciplined driving habits. He highlighted the importance of wearing helmets and seat belts, obeying speed limits and avoiding reckless driving, noting that simple precautions can save lives and prevent tragedies on the road.
Chief Secretary Manish Gupta echoed similar sentiments and urged collective action from government agencies, educational institutions, civil society organizations and individual citizens to create safer roads. He emphasized that awareness campaigns must translate into lasting behavioural changes if road accidents are to be significantly reduced.
The Road Safety Awareness Week will feature a series of activities, including workshops, interactive sessions, school and college outreach programmes, public awareness campaigns and community engagement initiatives. These programmes are designed to educate people on traffic regulations, responsible road use and the consequences of unsafe driving practices.
Officials said the campaign aims not only to reduce traffic violations but also to foster a culture of safety and responsibility among road users. Special focus will be placed on educating young drivers and riders, who play a critical role in shaping future road safety trends.
