ITANAGAR, September 5: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) marked a major milestone in the development of aviation infrastructure in Northeast India with the inauguration of the new state-of-the-art terminal building at Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar. Opened on September 4, the modern facility is expected to significantly enhance passenger experience, strengthen regional connectivity and serve as a gateway to Arunachal Pradesh’s growing tourism and economic sectors.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Union Civil Aviation Minister Shri Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu, AAI Chairman Shri Vipin Kumar, and senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India. Dignitaries described the project as a symbol of the government’s commitment to modern, sustainable and passenger-centric aviation infrastructure.
Designed with a blend of contemporary architecture and regional aesthetics, the new terminal reflects the rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh while incorporating advanced facilities to meet the growing demands of air travel. Officials stated that the terminal has been developed with a strong focus on sustainability, operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
The new facility introduces several innovative amenities aimed at improving the travel experience. Among them is the UDAN Yatri Café, which offers affordable refreshments to passengers, reinforcing the government’s vision of accessible and inclusive air travel. The terminal also features an AVSAR Outlet, providing a platform to showcase local products and handicrafts, thereby promoting indigenous entrepreneurship and regional culture.
To cater to families and young travelers, a dedicated Kids Zone has been established, offering a safe and engaging space for children. Another unique attraction is the Flybrary, an in-airport library that allows passengers to spend their waiting time productively through reading and learning.
Addressing the gathering, Union Civil Aviation Minister Shri Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said the project reflects the Centre’s continued emphasis on strengthening regional air connectivity under various aviation initiatives. He noted that modern airports play a crucial role in connecting remote regions to national and global markets, thereby driving economic growth and social development.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu highlighted the transformative impact of Donyi Polo Airport on Arunachal Pradesh. He said the expanded infrastructure would boost tourism, facilitate trade, improve accessibility and create new opportunities for investment and employment. The airport, he added, has already emerged as a key gateway for visitors exploring the state’s scenic beauty and cultural richness.
