Itanagar, September 5, 2025: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has lauded the efforts of the Wong Ama Self-Help Group (SHG) from Mandrelling village for its contribution to women’s empowerment and the preservation of traditional Monpa culinary heritage. During a recent interaction with members of the group, the Chief Minister praised their commitment to safeguarding indigenous food practices while creating livelihood opportunities for local women.
The Wong Ama SHG, led by Smti. Norbu Drema, a retired principal and respected community leader, has been actively working to promote traditional food culture and encourage economic self-reliance among women. The group is particularly known for preserving and promoting the preparation of Khabse and Churkam, two traditional delicacies that hold a special place in Monpa culture and are widely enjoyed across the Himalayan region.
Khabse, a deep-fried pastry often prepared during festivals and religious celebrations, and Churkam, a traditional dried cheese product, are considered important elements of the community’s culinary identity. Through their efforts, the SHG has helped ensure that these age-old recipes and food traditions continue to be passed on to younger generations.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Khandu commended the group for successfully blending cultural preservation with community development. He noted that initiatives such as those undertaken by the Wong Ama SHG not only strengthen local economies but also help maintain the unique cultural identity of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Chief Minister encouraged citizens to support locally produced goods and embrace the spirit of “Vocal for Local,” emphasizing that self-help groups play a crucial role in promoting sustainable livelihoods and grassroots entrepreneurship. He stated that supporting such initiatives would contribute to rural development while preserving the rich traditions and heritage of the state.
Khandu also highlighted the growing role of women-led organisations in driving social and economic change in Arunachal Pradesh. He described the Wong Ama SHG as an inspiring example of how women can become catalysts for community progress while safeguarding cultural values.
