Mizoram Minister Launches Pictorial Guide on Herpetofauna Discovery

Aizawl, September 16, 2025:  In a significant step toward promoting biodiversity conservation and scientific research in Mizoram, Pu Lalthansanga, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, officially launched a new publication titled “Pictorial Guide on the Herpetofauna Discovered/Reappraised from Mizoram” at the Mizoram Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Hub.

Mizoram Minister Launches Pictorial Guide on Herpetofauna Discovery

The publication has been developed through a collaborative effort involving the Mizoram EIACP Hub, the Mizoram Pollution Control Board, and the Developmental Biology & Herpetology Laboratory of the Department of Zoology, Mizoram University. The guide is designed to serve as an important reference resource for researchers, students, conservationists, environmental enthusiasts, and the general public interested in understanding the rich diversity of amphibians and reptiles found in the state.

Speaking at the launch programme, Minister Lalthansanga emphasized the importance of documenting and preserving Mizoram’s unique biological wealth. He noted that the state is located within the globally recognized Indo-Myanmar Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the world’s most ecologically significant regions. Due to its unique geographical location, varied climate, and extensive forest cover, Mizoram supports a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including many rare, endemic, and lesser-known species.

The Minister observed that while the state’s biodiversity is exceptionally rich, many species remain insufficiently studied and poorly documented. He said the newly launched pictorial guide would help bridge this knowledge gap by providing visual identification tools and scientific information on various species of amphibians and reptiles, collectively known as herpetofauna.

According to experts involved in the project, the guide includes species that have recently been discovered, re-evaluated, or scientifically reassessed in Mizoram. Many of these animals are difficult to observe in their natural habitats because of their elusive behavior, nocturnal activity patterns, or limited distribution. By compiling photographs and relevant scientific details in an accessible format, the publication is expected to make it easier for field researchers and wildlife enthusiasts to identify species accurately.

Lalthansanga stressed that raising awareness about herpetofauna is crucial because amphibians and reptiles play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. They help regulate insect and rodent populations, serve as indicators of environmental health, and contribute to the overall stability of ecosystems. Protecting these species, he said, is essential for ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.

The Minister further highlighted that conservation efforts cannot succeed through government action alone. He called for greater collaboration among scientists, educational institutions, local communities, conservation organizations, and policymakers to protect the state’s natural heritage. He also encouraged young researchers and students to take an active interest in biodiversity studies and wildlife conservation.

Officials at the event noted that the pictorial guide is expected to support future scientific studies, biodiversity surveys, and conservation planning in the state. It will also serve as an educational tool for schools, colleges, and environmental awareness programmes, helping foster greater appreciation for Mizoram’s unique wildlife.

The launch of the guide marks another milestone in Mizoram’s ongoing efforts to document its rich natural resources and promote evidence-based conservation. By bringing together government agencies, academic institutions, and environmental experts, the initiative reflects a growing commitment to safeguarding the state’s biodiversity for future generations.

Participants at the event expressed hope that the publication would inspire further research into Mizoram’s flora and fauna and strengthen public understanding of the ecological significance of the state’s diverse wildlife. The initiative is expected to contribute meaningfully to conservation, scientific discovery, and environmental education in the years ahead.
