Thenzawl, September 1, 2025: Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma today inaugurated the 3rd Mithun Day and National Seminar on Integrated Mithun Farming at Thenzawl Auditorium. In his address, the Chief Minister highlighted the crucial role of Mithun farming in bolstering Mizoram's rural economy and achieving self-sufficiency in meat production.
Lalduhoma expressed his pleasure that Mizoram was chosen to host the national-level event, acknowledging Mithun's deep-rooted significance in the socio-economic life of the Northeast. He pointed out that Mizoram's annual meat consumption costs nearly ₹630 crores, with around ₹40 crores worth of meat being imported, underscoring the urgent need for domestic production to meet demand.
The Chief Minister noted the success of the Mizoram Handholding Scheme, which has empowered over 16,000 "Progress Partners" to take up livestock farming as a sustainable livelihood. However, he also addressed significant challenges facing the sector, including limited technology adoption, a lack of scientific breeding centers, and fodder scarcity. He called for support from research institutions like ICAR and NEC to overcome these obstacles.
Lalduhoma appreciated the efforts of the Northeastern Council’s Mithun Multiplication Centre at Lungkawlh and the Rashtriya Gokul Mission’s Mithun Breed Development & Conservation Centre at Thenzawl. He stated that the government's goal is to transform Mithun rearing from a traditional subsistence activity into a profitable entrepreneurial venture with strong market linkages both within and outside the state.
Addressing the devastation caused by the African Swine Fever outbreak, which has led many farmers to switch to goat farming, the Chief Minister requested ICAR-CIRG to provide scientific guidance on suitable goat breeds for Mizoram’s specific agro-climatic conditions.
