Guwahati, Sept. 27, 2025: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday inaugurated the Jayanta Hazarika Flyover at Panikhaiti in Narengi, adding another major piece of transport infrastructure aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in Guwahati.
The flyover, named in honour of legendary Assamese singer, composer, and filmmaker Jayanta Hazarika, has been constructed at a cost of ₹69.32 crore. Measuring 530.52 metres in length and 7.5 metres in width, the project was completed within 48 months and is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters using the busy Panikhaiti-Narengi corridor.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Sarma said the new flyover would provide much-needed relief to motorists by decongesting one of Guwahati's busiest traffic intersections. He noted that the project would improve road connectivity between Guwahati and Upper Assam, facilitating smoother movement of people and goods while enhancing the city's overall transport network.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the flyover's importance in boosting tourism by providing easier access to popular destinations such as the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, renowned for its one-horned rhinoceroses, and the historic village of Mayong, often referred to as the "Land of Black Magic" for its rich folklore and cultural heritage.

Sharing the achievement on social media, Dr. Sarma described the newly inaugurated structures as "Bridges of prosperity," stating that the two flyovers inaugurated in congested parts of Guwahati would provide seamless connectivity to important residential areas, business centres, and cultural landmarks.
Officials said the project forms part of the Assam government's broader strategy to modernize urban infrastructure and improve mobility in the rapidly expanding state capital. Better road connectivity is also expected to enhance commercial activities, reduce fuel consumption caused by traffic bottlenecks, and improve emergency response times.
The Jayanta Hazarika Flyover is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters while contributing to economic growth, tourism development, and sustainable urban planning. The government believes the project will play a key role in transforming Guwahati into a more efficient, accessible, and well-connected metropolitan city.
