Assam’s Iconic Singer Zubeen Garg Passes Away in Singapore

Guwahati, Sept. 19: Assam and the Northeast were plunged into mourning on Thursday with the tragic passing of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, one of the region’s most celebrated cultural icons.

According to sources, the 52-year-old artist reportedly fell into the sea during an activity in Singapore between 12:30 and 1:00 PM. He was rushed to hospital, but doctors declared him dead.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep grief, calling Zubeen “one of Assam’s favourite sons.” In a heartfelt tribute on social media, Sarma wrote:

“He has gone too early… Zubeen's voice had an unmatched ability to energise people, and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled.”

Born in 1972, Garg became a household name in Assam with his breakthrough album Anamika in the early 1990s. His fame spread across India after the Bollywood chartbuster Ya Ali in 2006, which remains a classic. Over the years, his songs, deeply rooted in Assamese folk traditions while embracing modern styles, became the heartbeat of Assamese identity.

Beyond music, Zubeen was also an accomplished actor, producer, and director, leaving an imprint on Assamese cinema. Known for his outspoken nature, he often took stands on social issues and used his platform to uplift communities.
