Shillong Launches First Public Bicycle Sharing System to Promote Sustainable Mobility

Shillong, August 12, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with fitness icon Milind Soman, today launched Shillong’s first Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) System — a significant step towards sustainable and healthy urban transport.

The initiative is part of the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy (2024), which targets achieving 35% Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) in the city. “Today, we are pedaling towards a greener and healthier future,” the Chief Minister said, encouraging residents to embrace walking and cycling.

To mark the launch, the CM took a short ride to Police Bazar. Over 20 electric bicycles have been rolled out in the first phase, with the goal of reducing congestion, cutting carbon emissions, and promoting active lifestyles.

“This project is not just about transport; it’s about making Shillong a walking and cycling city,” Sangma added.

The initiative is led by the Urban Affairs Department, in collaboration with GIZ India under the Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action & Accessibility (SUM-ACA) project, with support from various partners.

Officials believe the PBS system will inspire more citizens to adopt eco-friendly commuting habits, helping transform Shillong into a model for green urban living.
