The land, to be acquired from the Meghalaya Industrial Development Finance Corporation (MIDFC), will pave the way for a ₹21 crore state-of-the-art facility focused on slalom, canoeing, and kayaking.

Announcing the decision on social media, CM Conrad Sangma said the Umtham River has already proven to be a vital training ground for water sports, helping Meghalaya secure five medals in the last National Games. The project aims to further boost the state's sporting profile and establish Meghalaya as a key destination for water sports in the country.
