Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha Repatriated to India After 127 Years

New Delhi, August 13, 2025: In a landmark achievement for India’s cultural and spiritual heritage, the sacred Piprahwa relics associated with Lord Buddha have been repatriated to the country after remaining abroad for 127 years. The return of the revered relics marks a historic moment in India’s ongoing efforts to reclaim and preserve priceless artefacts that form an integral part of its civilisational legacy.

The relics, which were taken out of India during the colonial era, resurfaced at an international auction, prompting swift intervention by the Ministry of Culture. Their successful return was made possible through a unique public-private partnership between the Government of India and the Godrej Industries Group, ensuring that the invaluable treasures were brought back to their place of origin.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu welcomed the development and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for facilitating the repatriation process. Describing the event as a moment of immense national pride, Khandu said the return of the relics represented not only the recovery of historical artefacts but also the revival of India’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

“The return of the sacred Piprahwa relics is a significant step in reconnecting with our rich civilisational roots and preserving them for future generations,” he stated. He further noted that the achievement reflects the government’s strong commitment to safeguarding India’s heritage and promoting cultural diplomacy on the global stage.
